A Day in the Life with Our Onsite Industrial Team
No two days are the same for our Onsite Industrial Recruitment Team. Working closely with one of our largest logistics clients, our team - Richard (Head of Onsite), Elena (Contracts Manager), and Billy (Account Manager) - are on the ground every day, ensuring staff operations are running smoothly during one of the busiest times of the year.
Our team is situated directly on our client’s site which is a very different dynamic to your ‘usual’ recruiter. This means we’re not just finding staff; we’re part of the daily operation and can see exactly what the job entails and the kind of people that would fit in. Thorn Baker’s Onsite Recruitment Team delivers faster, more accurate hires, cutting costs by getting it right first time.
Want to see how our onsite team operates at peak time? Here’s a look at a day in their life:
Between May and early June, the team’s main focus is on ramping up hires to meet rising summer demand. With tighter shipping targets and heavier workloads, clients, from SMEs to global logistics firms, need reliable staff in place to stay on track ahead of the winter season.
Generally, the day begins around 7am, arriving onsite to ensure everything is in place before heading over to the warehouses at 7:45am to sign in staff in by 8am. This daily morning interaction allows the team to answer any temp queries, freeing up the Production Manager to focus on wider operational tasks.
By 8:30am, our team will be starting their mornings by:
Prepping for planning and production meetings
Reviewing applications from our website, social media channels and local job adverts
By late morning, any suitable candidates who have applied will be sent a brief online registration form to collect essential details before moving forward with the induction process.
The induction process covers everything a new worker will need including;
An overview of the business and job expectations
A warehouse tour (including things like canteen areas and facilities)
Introductions to key team members and managers
Detailed information on health and safety, holiday booking, absence reporting, and payroll (which runs weekly, every Friday… without fail!)
After lunch, it’s back to action. By the afternoon, registration forms are in, and we’re booking interviews and inductions, often for the very same day. With clients under pressure, speed and efficiency are everything.
We will also register any new starters on our secure facial recognition system - used for clock-ins and clock-outs. This ensures accurate payroll and keeps the site secure and safe for all our staff.
By the end of the day, the team is wrapping up induction paperwork, confirming staff are set for tomorrow, posting new job ads, and planning ahead- pinpointing priorities for the next shift. Onsite recruitment is fast-paced and demanding, but with over 25 years’ experience, we’ve got it down to a fine art.
When asked what his favourite thing about being onsite is, Richard, shares his thoughts:
“Being onsite means we can talk to staff face-to-face. It’s a completely different type of relationship that you simply don’t get over the phone.”
A strong recruitment partner gets your business and knows the kind of people you need to grow. Trust is key, and being onsite makes that connection real.
