RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS AT THORN BAKER

RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS AT THORN BAKER

The chillies, of the vegetable variety that is, are now aplenty in the office after months of careful nurturing of the plants and perseverance by staff, who have been battling it out to see who could grow the biggest.

The competition has now finally come to fruition, with Joe Birchley being announced the winner with his whopping 3cm chilli.

Richard Stewart, branch manager at Thorn Baker and who came up with the idea said, “The whole thing started off as a bit of a joke but it soon turned into a serious business. There were even rumours of sabotage! However it has all been good fun and Joe’s chilli is particularly impressive, making him a worthy winner.

In a bid to make their chilli’s grow larger, competitors came up with some bizarre ideas such as feeding their chillis with banana or by encasing them in plastic containers to create a greenhouse effect. Some people even gave their chilli plants names.

“I am so pleased to have won,” said Joe. “I think some of the other guys were secretly jealous of my chilli so I decided to keep my tactics close to my chest. However, now it’s all over I can reveal that the key to my success was down to plain old TLC. I simply made sure that it was properly fed and watered and had plenty of light.”
