Figures published by the REC earlier this month report a reduction in permanent staff places for the first time since July 2009. Surprisingly, figures show an increase in temporary workers usage across the board, despite concerns last quarter that the introduction of the Agency Workers Regulations in October would slow temporary recruitment and lead to more contractual and permanent staff hires.
The REC attributes this downturn largely to a decrease in available healthcare roles. Research posted by The Conference Board in November 2011, showed a dip in advertised healthcare roles of 13,600. However, from a commercial perspective, the IT, HR & Accountancy sectors showed an increase in permanent staff recruiting for October 2011, pointing to growth in some areas of the private sector.
When to Hire
Commercial Division Manager, Thorn Baker, Sam Lawrence says: “Figures might suggest that due to economic uncertainty, organisations are resisting committal to permanent hiring decisions, opting for the solution of a temporary work force until the calendar year is out. Typically January sees a busy month for the office and commercial sector, particularly in permanent recruitment, with organisations pushing forward with recruiting decisions for the coming year, and candidates opting to effect a change in their career path following contemplation over the Christmas period”.
Recent figures posted by the REC would suggest that recruitment on the whole is on the up with planned recruitment for the coming year anticipated to rise, with reported growth already showing in key areas such as HR, IT, Accountancy & Customer Services.
Sam continues; “The best way for a business to get it right is their strategy. Thorn Baker will continue to work with our clients to ensure they have a robust, yet flexible recruitment plan ahead for the coming year to adapt to any market changes. We recognise the key to growth in any organisation is its employees, and we are committed to providing the best the market place has to offer, using flexible solutions that work in tandem with our client’s business strategy in order to ensure their continued success.”
