Businesses have increased their reliance on temporary labour in the UK in July by 21 per cent on last year.

The data reveals that industries, including waste management, retail and business services have continued to increase their use of temporary staff. This shows a continued reluctance from businesses to hire permanent staff and using temporary agency labour to fill skills gaps when extra staff are needed

Izabella Edwards, Commercial Regional Manager Comments;

 “Here at Thorn Baker we have noticed an increase in our clients choosing temporary labour over committing to recruit permanent staff.  For smaller businesses, the cost of employing someone all year round compared with temporary staff to cover a 4 month peak time, for example, can prove much more cost effective.  For larger businesses, achieving Head Office sign off to increase headcount in the midst of what is still a difficult economic climate is proving to be difficult. Again, the cost of employing permanent staff all year round is often much more expensive than having a temporary workforce in to cover peak times.

We do still however find some businesses are reluctant to go down the route of employing a temporary workforce even when it’s the most obvious solution, but that is understandable, especially with potential implications of the upcoming Agency Worker Regulations. Don’t forget you can join our AWR LinkedIn discussion group should you need any free advice on the topic.

The simple fact is, that approached in the correct way, employing a temporary workforce can prove cost efficient for businesses. Here at Thorn Baker we are experienced in approaching temporary recruitment solutions in a way that will best suit each individual organisation we work with, as well as being knowledgeable and ‘ahead of the game’ in terms of offering solutions to the AWR regulations.  If you are considering a temporary workforce for part of your business, get in touch with Thorn Baker, and let us help you to stay complaint and competitive”.
